Merry monks make fine beer

Monday, February 6th, 2006

Weyerbacher’s Merry Monks’ Ale proves once and for all that a life of refraining from worldly pleasures can sometimes produce a fine belly wash. This bottle fermented golden ale has a cloudy feel that delivers a nice fruity acidic kick. This sour bite is excellent all the way down and the beer has a pleasant aroma to boot. Even though the beer has a cloudy essence and a potent 9.3% alcohol content, it carries a thin body that may leave you pondering the virtues of asceticism or at least the wonders of acidic tasting brew.

Snakes and Dogs bite

But, if you combine the two (like a Griffin) does the creature still bite? If you drink Flying Dog’s Dog Snake IPA, the answer is “of course!”

This amber colored brew has a light white head with a hoppy bite that amazingly comes off tasting super smooth. I usually don’t enjoy IPAs too much, but Dog Snake is certainly an exception with its spicy undertones which leave an excellent aftertaste. The hoppiness comes off in its pleasant aroma too.

There are only a few IPAs that I like drinking and the Flying Dog Brewery makes one of them. Enjoy!

A mild winter

Our winter hasn’t been very inspiring- I think we’ve had one measurable snow fall. Our local mountains are not snowcapped- certainly not very exciting.

That’s what I found myself thinking as I sipped upon Pyramid Brewery’s Snow Cap Ale. This dark reddish ale definitely wasn’t bad, but there wasn’t anything about it that would make me go out of my way to have another. With 7% alcohol and a small head, it did have a warming feel; moreover, it had some spiciness to its taste, but I think it could have delivered more.

Much like Mother Nature, who appears to be holding off on us, Pyramid under delivered with Snow Cap.

Pucker up, baby!

Ever tasted a Warhead? It’s this hard candy that is incredibly challenging to keep in your mouth due to its incredible sourness. Yet, for some reason, you keep it in your mouth because it tastes so good.

The Gueuze Fond Tradition St. Louis lambic beer has to be one of the coolest beers I’ve had in a long time. This amazingly acidic beer reminds me of a good Warhead, except this beer is better. This light colored beer has a pleasantly acidic taste of sour-apples from the start that you can feel all the way down your throat. With no hint of a head, a pleasant fruity sweet essence emanates from this must try tart beer.

While a bottle of Gueuze Fond Tradition may cost more than a box of Warheads, this is one puckeringly good beer that will leave you smiling (and in need of a good kiss).
